in the record. the presiding officer: without objection. mr. inhofe: mr. president, yesterday president obama made a beautiful speech. i think everyone agrees that he's -- he's a very persuasive speaker. and although i didn't agree with anything he said, still it was -- it was said beautifully. i want to read one part of the speech that -- that -- because i don't want to get it wrong. he said -- quote -- "we will respond to the threat of climate change knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. the path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult, but america cannot resist this transition. we must lead it. we cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries. we must claim its promise and that's how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure." that's a direct quote that came out of the president's speech. and it really is a lot of little subliminal things in there that people didn't pick up on but i did. and one is, and they talked we misshowed the leadership. well,

in the coming months. the presiding officer: the republican leader. mr. mcconnell: mr. president, i want to start by congratulating president obama on his inauguration. presidential inaugurations are always a time for the country to come together. we all feel a certain pride in the event and we're reminded how fortunate we are to live in a nation where we have the ability to resolve differences freely. inauguration day is a time for new beginnings, a chance to learn from the mistakes and missed opportunities from the past as we reengage in vitally important debates about our future. too often over the past four years political considerations trumped the need to put our country on a sound financial footing and a path to prosperity. today we should recommit ourselves to the task of facing up to the problems head on. i understand that the passions of an election can sometimes overshadow the business of governing, but the presidential campaign is now behind us, and so it's my hope that the president will finally be willing to do what republicans have been asking him to do since his first ina

they want to ginn up fear. >> president obama ready to wage a political battle for his gun proposals against the gun lobby. joining me now, eric pratt. mr. pratt, thank you very much for being with us. >> thank you for having me. >> your response to the president and his proposals, are there things that he proposed that you could support, perhaps tightening the rules on background checks? >> well, we don't think any of the things he's proposing would have stopped what happened in connecticut, wouldn't have stopped adam lanza from killing a victim and stealing those firearms to commit such an atrocity. if there is an area of agreement we have with the president, he quoted from the declaration of independence telling all men are endowed by their creator for inalienable rights. that's an interesting concept, whether it's the right to vote, right to sit behind a microphone or the right to choose how i'm going to protect myself, all those rights cannot be infringed. >> they can, because the first amendment is infringed, i have to obey all sorts of regulations from the fcc, there are things we can
